There are several great applications, ranging from free to fairly expensive. Personally, I find that software-based mind maps flow much faster and are easier to work with because they don't require erasing and redrawing to move topics around. Mind mapping is easy to accomplish on paper and makes a great tool for taking notes in class without pulling out the old laptop.
